Katherine (Kate) Baldwin, DVM, MS
Dr. Kate was born and raised in rural south-central PA and is thrilled to be able to serve the community she grew up in. Dr. Kate has been obsessively involved with horses since the age of 9, exploring many aspects of equine sports including 4-H, trail riding, hunter-jumpers, driving, eventing and most recently, endurance riding. Her joy is horses, but she also loves almost anything with four legs.
Dr. Kate took a non-traditional course in her education by first completing an AA at Harrisburg Area Community College before transferring to Shippensburg University to complete a BS in Biology. While applying to vet school, she also completed an MS in Biology with a Master’s thesis entitled “The Prevalence of Tick-borne Pathogens in South Central Pennsylvania and Surrounding Regions”. Dr. Kate earned her DVM degree from Western University of Health Sciences in California. WesternU’s unique curriculum of problem-based, case-based learning and two full years of clinical experiences has helped to prepare her for a sole-practitioner, ambulatory practice.
Dr. Kate has been doing equine dentistry for 15 years so is particularly interested in dentistry and also equine ophthalmology while also focusing on general equine wellness and nutrition. She is licensed in PA and MD and can draw Coggins and write health certificates in both states. Dr. Kate also works at Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter one day a week doing spays and neuters.
In her spare time and with her Border Collie, Nellie, always by her side, Dr. Kate enjoys riding and competing her POA, Addie, her Quarab, Lawrence and her up and coming Arabian, Ames, in Endurance. While not on the trail, Dr. Kate can be found working with her young Araloosa, Pyxis or dressage schooling or jumping around in the arena .
Tom Crouse, Equine Dental Technician
Tom didn’t discover his love of horses until the age of 18 when he began working on the Maryland race tracks as a groom, then exercise rider and amateur race rider and tattoo technician and assistant for the racetrack veterinary group. He began doing equine dentistry under the watchful eyes of the veterinarians and eventually became busy enough to create a full-time job and business, Maryland Equine Dental, Inc. (MED) in 1997. In 2000, Tom moved to PA while continuing to serve MD and eventually expanding business into PA.
Tom and Kate have worked as a team since the end of 2005 and do not plan on changing that. Tom will continue to do equine dentistry but will also have an active role in the veterinary medicine side as well.
While not working on horses, Tom plays guitar in a classic rock/country band called “Gravy” and DJs events and parties for fun. Tom also enjoys doing demos and presentations for 4-H and horse-related groups when not spending time with his retiredhorse, Awesometastic or training his 2 year old Araloosa, Pickles or practicing his mounted archery skills.
